ALGIERS- Despite numerous Arab governments opposing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Algeria has consistently stood by his side since 2011. Since then, officials in Algiers have strongly condemned Arab League resolutions against Damascus.
At the preparatory meeting for the Economic and Social Council in Jeddah, Syria praised Algeria’s efforts to facilitate its readmission to the Arab League, highlighting the country’s crucial role in the region.
Recently, President Abdelmajid Tebboune received a phone call from his Syrian counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, just one day after Arab foreign ministers agreed to reinstate Syria’s membership in the Arab League following a 12-year suspension.
In a statement released by the Algerian Presidency, al-Assad expressed his gratitude to Tebboune for Algeria’s unwavering support in facilitating Syria’s return to the Arab League. This gesture of appreciation underscores the strong bond between the two nations and their shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
In a related context, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Hossam Zaki, said in a statement to a SANA correspondent that the preparatory meeting for the Economic and Social Council in Jeddah discussed important social issues for joint Arab action.
Zaki added, “We are keen, through these meetings, to ensure that the discussed topics are of interest to the Arab citizens and their reality.”
“We have not yet achieved economic integration at the highest level, but there are good steps we have taken to achieve this integration,” Zaki added.
“I gave a speech today on behalf of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, in which we welcomed the presence of Syria, which paves the way for a new phase of the Arab situation and benefits all societies,” Zaki said.
