Algiers, Algeria | August 4th, 2024 — On August 4, 2024, Kaylia Nemour, the Algerian gymnast who clinched the gold medal in the asymmetric bars at the Paris 2024 Olympics, extended her heartfelt gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his unwavering support and encouragement. Nemour, celebrating her first Olympic appearance, shared her joy and appreciation in a press conference in Paris.
President Tebboune’s Public Congratulations
President Tebboune publicly congratulated Nemour on her extraordinary achievement during a ceremony at the National Army Circle in Beni Messous, Algiers, held in conjunction with the celebration of the People’s National Army Day. “On behalf of the Army, the Presidency of the Republic, and the Algerian people, we extend our congratulations to our athlete Nemour for her gold medal,” declared President Tebboune.
Historic Olympic Triumph
At just 17 years old, Kaylia Nemour achieved a historic first for Algeria by winning gold in the asymmetric bars at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Her performance, which garnered a score of 15.700 (7.200 for difficulty and 8.500 for execution), was a triumph in a highly competitive final, with Nemour besting her main rival, China’s Qiu Qiuyan (15.500), while the American Sunisa Lee took the bronze (14.800).
This victory marks a significant milestone as Nemour becomes the first Algerian gymnast, as well as the first Arab and African gymnast, to win Olympic gold. She joins an elite group of Algerian women to have won Olympic medals, following Hassiba Boulmerka (Barcelona 1992) and Nouria Benida Merah (Sydney 2000).
An Emotional and Celebrated Achievement
In a deeply emotional moment, Nemour, clad in her sparkling white leotard, burst into tears of joy and embraced her coach, Marc Chirilcenco, amidst the cheers of Algerian supporters at Arena Bercy. Reflecting on her historic win, she described it as “the most beautiful day of my life,” expressing immense satisfaction and pride in achieving her lifelong dream.
“This medal is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication,” Nemour said. “I’m thrilled to have made Algeria proud. This is truly the pinnacle of my athletic career.”
A Promising Future Ahead
Nemour’s coach, Marc Chirilcenco, noted that her singular focus over the past two years had been on winning an Olympic medal. “Her dream has come true, marking a golden beginning to what promises to be a bright and successful career,” he stated.
Following her success in Paris, Nemour plans to enjoy a well-deserved break before resuming training for future competitions. Her remarkable achievement not only celebrates her personal dedication but also brings a renewed sense of pride and hope to Algerian sports.
