Algeria – In a significant diplomatic development, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Algeria, Ahmed Attaf, received a phone call from his Swiss counterpart, Mr. Ignazio Cassis, to discuss the ongoing legal proceedings involving retired Major General Khaled Nezzar. The conversation, which took place on Thursday, highlighted growing concerns from Algeria regarding the case’s recent developments.

In response to Mr. Cassis’ comments expressing Switzerland’s position on the matter, Attaf emphasized three crucial aspects that have become central to the escalating controversy.

  1. Sovereignty and Judicial Responsibility

Attaf began by asserting that the principle of judicial independence should not be used as a justification for irresponsibility. He emphasized that any judicial system, regardless of its sovereignty and independence, should exercise its authority with due diligence and respect for the policies of a sovereign state.

  1. Providing a Platform for Terrorism

Algeria firmly believes that Swiss justice has inadvertently provided a platform for terrorists, their allies, and supporters to discredit Algeria’s honorable fight against terrorism. Attaf expressed deep concern over attempts to tarnish the reputation of those who confronted terrorism and dishonor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the battle against it.

  1. Revisionist Interpretations of Algeria’s History

The Algerian Foreign Minister pointed out that Swiss justice is conducting a revisionist interpretation of Algeria’s history during the tumultuous 1990s. He criticized the court’s use of unfounded accusations, inappropriate comparisons, and blatant falsifications that ultimately undermine its credibility.

Attaf underscored that the international community universally recognizes Algeria’s heroic and solitary fight against terrorism during that era. Algeria’s role and expertise in combating terrorism received widespread support at regional and international levels.

Algeria’s leadership in the African Union for preventing and combating terrorism was also acknowledged, with the country preparing to assume the presidency of two subsidiary Committees of the Council on the subject of terrorism. Additionally, Algeria is set to co-chair a Conference on the fight against terrorism in Africa with the United States of America.

Despite global recognition, Swiss justice appears to stand alone in its skepticism of Algeria’s efforts. Attaf lamented Swiss justice’s “revisionist reading” of Algeria’s valiant battle against terrorism.

The Foreign Minister expressed deep concern over the unique nature of the situation, where an organization comprising former terrorists and their allies could use Swiss justice to put the accused on trial. He stressed that Algeria finds it unacceptable that Swiss justice presumes to pass judgment on the political choices of a sovereign and independent state concerning national security.

While acknowledging Algeria’s gratitude for Switzerland’s historical role in Algeria’s quest for independence, Attaf cautioned that the current situation has reached unacceptable and intolerable limits.

In a stern warning, Attaf conveyed that the Algerian Government is determined to take all necessary actions, even those with undesirable consequences, for the future of Algerian-Swiss relations. He expressed hope that diplomatic measures will be taken to prevent the situation from irreparably damaging the relationship between the two nations.
