ALGIERS – The Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, called on Sunday in Algiers for the necessity of developing an Arab media strategy capable of providing Arab citizens with accurate, comprehensive, and instantaneous information.

In his address at the opening of the periodic meetings of the coordinators of Radio and Television and telecommunications engineers of the Arab States Broadcasting Union (ASBU), Mr. Laagab indicated that this strategy aiming to “strengthen Arab media sovereignty” will be “an impregnable barrier against practices of blackout, misinformation, and media manipulation.”

The minister cited, for example, “international misinformation and manipulation characterizing Western media coverage of the Zionist aggression against the Gaza Strip in Palestine,” which he described as “unprecedented examples in history in terms of international misinformation and manipulation.”

Mr. Laagab also paid tribute to the Palestinian journalists who recently fell as martyrs, emphasizing their dedication to their mission and their sacrifice to “expose the crimes of extermination perpetrated by the Zionist entity against defenseless civilians and document them through sound and image.”

Furthermore, he urged Arab media, given their “major role in fervently defending Arab causes,” to work towards “unifying visions and positions in the best interests of our peoples and our nation to protect them against the covetousness and threats that await them.”

At the national level, Mr. Laagab highlighted the “paramount interest” shown by Algeria in promoting and diversifying its media landscape, which currently includes “no less than 20 television channels, both public and private, over 180 newspapers in print, more than 200 online newspapers, in addition to nearly 60 radio channels.” This should enable Algeria to “cover Arab events, transmit the concerns and ambitions of Arab peoples, and address their issues, which are now a priority at the heart of its media strategy, which emphasizes coordination and information exchange among Arab states.”

The minister took this opportunity to express his gratitude to Arab media for their “quality coverage” of the 7th summit of gas-exporting countries (GECF), held from February 29 to March 2 in Algiers.

In turn, the Director-General of the ASBU, Souleiman Abderrahim, highlighted the “special interest” shown by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, “in promoting the ASBU process,” welcoming, in this context, Algeria’s hosting of the Arab Center for Information and Program Exchange, which is part of the ASBU.

For his part, the Director-General of the Arab Center for Information and Program Exchange, Mohsen Karim Slimani, presented an overview of the volume of Arab television program exchanges, with over 14,000 exchanges recorded last year, focusing primarily on information about conflicts, with the Zionist aggression against Gaza at the forefront.
