ALGIERS- In a recent meeting with the Labor Inspectorate staff, the Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Fayçal Bentaleb, unveiled impressive results of their enhanced supervisory operations. The qualitative support provided to the Labor Inspectorate has led to a notable increase in their presence in the field and a substantial rise in the number of visits conducted during 2023 when compared to the previous year.

Mr. Bentaleb reported that the number of visits completed by the Labor Inspectorate had surged from 133,007 during the first nine months of 2022 to a remarkable 154,732 visits during the same period in 2023. This represents a substantial increase of 21,725 visits, equivalent to 16.3%. These extensive visits reached out to a staggering 3,157,344 workers, signifying a tremendous positive impact on the workforce.
One of the focal points of the Labor Inspectorate’s oversight activities is ensuring compliance with labor legislation, including efforts to combat the non-declaration of workers. These initiatives have continued to ensure social coverage for all workers, with field visits by labor inspectors resulting in the amicable settlement of the situation of 14,035 workers towards the National Fund for social insurance over the past nine months of 2023.
Furthermore, Mr. Bentaleb emphasized the importance of strengthening the culture of social dialogue within the institution. This will be achieved through collaboration with social partners, including awareness campaigns, guidance, early conflict resolution, and the utilization of the Labor Inspectorate’s expertise and experience to prevent collective conflicts in the workplace.
In an era of increasing digitalization, the Minister urged officials in the sector to expedite the digitization of procedures and services carried out by the General Inspectorate for Work at both central and local levels. Additionally, he stressed the need to work closely with social partners to align the fundamental laws of trade union organizations with the legislative and regulatory provisions outlined in the new law related to the exercise of the trade union right.
In closing, the Minister of Labor called for intensified efforts in supervisory work, highlighting the importance of strategically targeting areas and sectors that require special attention to ensure the fundamental rights of workers are upheld. The achievements of the Labor Inspectorate in 2023 demonstrate a commitment to creating a fair and just working environment for millions of workers in the country.
