Algiers, Algeria | July 24th, 2024 — In a powerful address delivered on Tuesday in Algiers, Laïd Rebiga, Algeria’s Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, proclaimed that the quest for Western Sahara’s independence, as the final remaining colony in Africa, constitutes a profound moral duty for every African who remains faithful to the vision set forth by the continent’s historical leaders. This statement was made during the opening of the International Seminar on the Algerian Revolution and its African Dimension.

Rebiga highlighted that the endeavor to achieve Western Sahara’s independence is intrinsically linked to the legacy of distinguished African figures such as Ahmed Ben Bella, Nelson Mandela, Kwame Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, and Amílcar Cabral. He underscored that fulfilling this obligation is essential for honoring the principles advocated by these leaders and advancing the broader cause of the continent.

Reaffirming Africa’s Commitment to Global Justice

Rebiga praised Africa’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, reaffirming the continent’s endorsement of the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state with El Quds as its capital. He stressed the importance of adhering to pan-African values to ensure a prosperous future for the continent. “Algeria believes in the capacity of African youth to forge a pioneering and flourishing Africa, as envisioned by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” Rebiga stated. He commended Tebboune for his commitment to collective African action, development initiatives, and the continent’s advocacy on the global stage.

Reflecting on the support provided by Africa during Algeria’s revolutionary struggle, Rebiga reiterated Algeria’s steadfast commitment to defending the rights of oppressed peoples to self-determination and sovereignty. He cautioned against the “avarice of adversaries” and emphasized the need to draw lessons from history to forge a unified future through cooperative policies. Such collaboration, he asserted, is vital for addressing threats and ensuring the continent’s sustainability and self-sufficiency in food production.

Strengthening Cooperation and Pan-African Unity

Rebiga described the seminar as a pivotal opportunity to underscore African unity and celebrate the continent’s revolutionary heritage. He emphasized Algeria’s central role within Africa, a continent that, despite its colonial past, has achieved notable successes through its revolutionaries. Rebiga referenced the seminar’s theme as an embodiment of Massinissa’s motto, “Africa for Africans,” underscoring the critical importance of synergy and unity in advancing the continent’s interests.

The seminar’s recommendations are anticipated to enhance cooperative relations between Algeria and other African nations. Organized by the Ministry of Mujahideen and Rights Holders in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Association of Friends of the Algerian Revolution, the event seeks to bolster regional cooperation and solidarity.

The seminar serves as a testament to Algeria’s enduring commitment to pan-African solidarity and its determination to promote the continent’s collective goals while addressing shared challenges.
