ALGIERS- Lakhdar Rekhroukh, the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, has announced plans to develop an information system to continuously monitor the condition of roads in each province. Speaking during a plenary session dedicated to oral questions at the People’s National Assembly, he stated that this system would ensure continuous road maintenance with a reasonable budget. Given that Algeria’s road network is considered the largest in Africa, the allocated budget for road maintenance this year is substantial, estimated at around 60 billion dinars.
In response to a question regarding the completion of the dual-carriageway at the southern entrance of Jijel, connecting Djemila via Texana, Gaouiss, and the provincial capital, the minister confirmed that the duplication process of the entire 54.9 km stretch is not currently a priority for the sector. This is due to an ongoing parallel project along Route 77, linking the port of Djen-Djen (Jijel) and El-Eulma (Sétif) over a distance of 110 km. The completion of two sections of this bypass, spanning 40 km, will be ensured by the end of 2024.
Regarding a question about the completion of a northern bypass road in Chelghoum El Aid, Mila province, the minister responded that a request had been submitted to the Ministry of Finance. It is currently under study in coordination with relevant ministries to allow the Department of Public Works of the province to continue and complete the technical studies. This will determine the final project cost and include the project’s implementation in two stages, depending on the financial coverage of the initial operation.
The minister also added that a comprehensive study would be launched on all highway entrances, noting that “the distance between one interchange and another is approximately 20 to 25 kilometers on the highway.”
