Algiers, Algeria | May 22, 2024 — Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Productions, Ahmed Badani, announced, yesterday, that the national campaign for bluefin tuna fishing will commence next Thursday.
During his visit to Mostaganem, the Minister assured that “in two days, we will announce the launch of the national bluefin tuna fishing campaign, marked this year by an increase in the quota allocated to Algeria.”
Badani specified that Algeria’s quota has increased by 40 tons, compared to 20 tons in 2023, and that this campaign, aiming for a volume of 2,046 tons, will involve 34 vessels specialized in offshore fishing.
$27 Million in Exports in 2023
This increase, he said, “represents an achievement for our country, known for its commitment to fulfilling its entire bluefin tuna quota.”
Mr. Badani also noted that “the past year saw exports totaling $27 million, as part of the Government’s efforts to diversify non-hydrocarbon exports.”
Seeding 12 Reservoirs in July
The Minister also highlighted that in July, seeding will be carried out in 12 reservoirs across the country, where aquaculture is practiced by around sixty industry professionals.
In this context, he recalled that Algeria has, for the first time, risen to the top category of the CGPM classification, similar to Mediterranean countries, based on criteria and commitments in the field of sustainable fishing, as determined in the latest meeting of this organization and the FAO.
