Launch of the “Youth Forum for National Memory”: Algeria’s Strategic Move Against Disinformation

Algiers, Algeria | August 9th, 2024 — On Thursday, in Algiers, Laïd Rebiga, the Minister of Mujahideen and the Rights Holders, inaugurated the “Youth Forum for National Memory,” an initiative designed to combat disinformation and deepen the younger generation’s understanding of Algeria’s national history.

The forum aims to provide a specialized platform for content creators focused on national memory and historical themes. Its core mission is to confront misinformation campaigns and promote digital literacy, ensuring that accurate historical knowledge is disseminated through a unified national discourse.

Minister Rebiga underscored the critical need for this platform amidst growing cultural invasions targeting Algeria through cyberspace and social networks. He remarked, “Given the attempts to undermine our country through cyberspace and social media, this platform is essential for creating alternative digital content and fighting disinformation.” Rebiga recognized the pivotal role of the youth in this endeavor, acknowledging their potential to craft alternative digital narratives that uphold national integrity.

In his address, Rebiga highlighted the forum’s objective of guiding Algerian youth content creators by offering precise and clear information, free from ambiguity or distortion. “We aim to direct young creators, providing them with accurate information to uphold our values and principles for Algeria,” he stated. He reiterated the government’s commitment to equipping youth with the necessary resources and scientific tools to enhance their content creation skills, reflecting Algeria’s esteemed history.

An Innovative Digital Space for Creative Expression

The president of the Youth Forum for National Memory, who is also a content creator, Dr. Mohamed Doumir lauded the establishment of this novel digital space. He described it as a significant advancement in preserving Algeria’s history and shielding the youth from falsehoods and misrepresentations about the nation’s past. He commended the Ministry of Mujahideen for spearheading this initiative, which he believes will provide Algerian youth with a platform to express their creativity in service of national heritage.

Moreover, M. Doumir highlighted the strong demand among Algerians, particularly social media users, for content related to national history and identity. In light of recent hostile disinformation campaigns targeting Algeria’s symbols, personalities, and historical narratives, Doumir praised the youth’s efforts to restore trust and strengthen the connection of younger generations to their homeland. He encouraged young content creators to rise to the occasion and produce content befitting the 70th anniversary of the Liberation Revolution, celebrating Algeria’s national memory.
