Lavrov Ridicules Bourita: Russia Stands for the Self-Determination of the Sahrawi People

ALGIERS- In a desperate attempt by the Makhzen regime to capitalize on the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Marrakech during the Arab-Russian Forum held this Wednesday, marked by Algeria’s absence, to score points in terms of propaganda regarding “sovereignty” over the territories of Western Sahara.
However, this attempt turned into humiliation as Sergey Lavrov, during a press conference with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, reiterated Russia’s position in favor of respecting international law, which requires holding a referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
Nasser Bourita’s attempt became a subject of ridicule, as the Russian Foreign Minister had already expressed Moscow’s stance on the issue a few months ago during his visit to Mauritania. On that occasion, he reiterated Russia’s position, favoring the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions that call for a referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
