ALGIERS- The Libyan Minister of Oil and Gas, Mohammed Aoun, emphasized the critical importance of the 7th summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), which Algeria will host from February 29th to March 2nd of the current year, in light of the turmoil gripping the world.

Algerian radio relayed the remarks of the Libyan minister, who underscored that gas-exporting countries hold reserves that could exceed 70% of global reserves. This confers “extreme importance” to the forum, held every two years, as these countries contribute to supplying various regions of the world with gas, whether in gaseous, liquid, or liquefied form.

The minister highlighted Algeria and Libya as African countries that export significant quantities of gas globally, appreciating the forum’s role in mitigating the fuel shortage crisis in Europe, particularly given current geopolitical circumstances.

The Libyan minister called for an energy partnership based on “equity” and recognition of common interests, taking into account the situation of many African countries that produce and export gas. He explained, “The circumstances of each country must be taken into account, especially African countries with vast resources,” emphasizing that “African countries have not benefited from these resources, and it is now time for them to do so.”

The same official also urged African countries to unite in matters of gas, electricity, water, road, and rail networks to ensure their interests and those of other countries. He renewed the call to African organizations such as the African Union and the Organization of African Petroleum Producing Countries to unite and work in the interests of their countries, noting that “there are more than 600 million Africans who are not connected to electricity.”

The minister stated that the African continent possesses enormous wealth, whether in energy resources (gas or oil) or natural, agricultural, and animal resources, and therefore Africans should live a decent life based on the wealth available on their continent.
