Algiers, Algeria | July 8th, 2024 — As of February 2024, Algeria has emerged as a leading global player in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, securing the seventh position worldwide and the top spot in Africa with a production capacity of 25.5 million tonnes per year. This noteworthy achievement is detailed in a report by the International Gas Union (IGU).
In terms of global rankings, Algeria surpasses Nigeria, which holds the eighth position with a production capacity of nearly 22.2 million tonnes per year, and Egypt, which stands at the tenth position with a capacity of 12.2 million tonnes per year. The United States leads the global LNG production with a substantial 91.4 million tonnes per year, followed by Australia with 87.6 million tonnes per year, and Qatar with 77.1 million tonnes per year. These three countries collectively account for more than half of the world’s LNG production capacity.
Malaysia ranks fourth globally with a production capacity of 32 million tonnes per year, followed by Indonesia at 30.3 million tonnes per year, and Russia at 29.1 million tonnes per year. Completing the top ten are Trinidad and Tobago with 14.8 million tonnes per year, and Egypt.
The report also highlights a global increase in LNG production capacity, reaching 483.1 million tonnes per year by the end of February 2024. However, the average utilization rate of this capacity saw a slight decline to 88.7% in the previous year, down from 89% in 2022.
Algeria has not only enhanced its production capacity but also its export volume. By the end of 2023, Algeria recorded an additional 2.88 million tonnes in LNG exports compared to 2022, bringing its total exports to 13 million tonnes. This gives Algeria an estimated market share of 3%, maintaining its position as the seventh-largest LNG exporter globally.
The IGU report further emphasizes significant LNG trade flows involving Algeria. In 2023, the trade volume between Algeria and Turkey was 4.29 million tonnes, marking it as the largest LNG trade in Africa. Additionally, the trade from Algeria to France accounted for 3.20 million tonnes, positioning it as the third largest LNG trade in Europe.
These developments underscore Algeria’s strategic importance in the global LNG market and highlight its significant contributions to the energy sector both regionally and internationally.
