ALGIERS- A recent report released by Kuwaiti logistics group Agility and specialized research firm Transport Intelligence reveals that 61.6% of international players in the logistics sector are considering investing in Africa this year. This decision comes amidst ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties and disruptions in global supply chains.

The survey, which polled 830 executives from international logistics companies, indicates that 47.4% of respondents plan to make additional investments in Africa, where they already have a presence. Additionally, 14.2% of respondents intend to make their first investment on the continent. Meanwhile, 31.8% of those surveyed stated that their investment and expansion strategy in Africa will remain unchanged.

Importantly, containerized imports to African countries saw a 6.7% increase during the first seven months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, and a 10.1% increase compared to the same period in 2019. These figures, reported by maritime brokerage firm Broker and cited by Ecofin, indicate a notable uptick in containerized goods traffic on the continent.

This upward trend in containerized trade is expected to continue in the coming years, particularly with the gradual operationalization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The AfCFTA, aimed at creating a single market for goods and services across the African continent, is poised to further stimulate trade and investment flows within Africa.

The decision by international logistics firms to invest in Africa underscores the continent’s growing importance as a strategic market for global trade and commerce. Despite challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic and global economic uncertainties, Africa’s potential for growth and development continues to attract significant interest and investment from international players in the logistics industry.
