Algiers- Algeria, May 4, 2024 – Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid, the Minister of Knowledge Economy, Startups, and Micro-enterprises, participated in the 21st edition of the Middle East and North Africa Business School Forum held at the London Business School.
During the forum, Minister Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid delivered a speech outlining Algeria’s efforts to diversify its economy through various government policies aimed at establishing a knowledge-based economy and fostering an environment conducive to startups and innovation across Africa.
The event served as an opportunity for Minister Oualid to present Algeria’s new vision, which revolves around leveraging Algerian competencies to diversify the national economy, develop various skills, and promote innovation and technology, particularly among the youth. This vision is supported by flexible legal frameworks and new funding mechanisms, including the Startup Investment Fund, as well as incentives for innovation, research and development, and startup investment.
Minister Oualid highlighted Algeria’s significant capabilities, as the country ranks third in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Africa, with one of the highest growth rates in the North Africa and Middle East region. This growth is attributed to notable increases in non-fuel growth rates, driven by economic diversification reforms.
Emphasizing Algeria’s increased openness to foreign investments, Minister Oualid pointed out the issuance of the new investment law. He also underscored Algeria’s efforts toward economic integration in Africa, including infrastructure projects, such as trans-desert roads and fiber optic networks, along with participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Algeria’s participation reflects its commitment to fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic development, both nationally and across the African continent. By capitalizing on its human capital and creating an enabling environment for startups, Algeria aims to become a hub for innovation and technological advancement in Africa.
