Algiers, Algeria | June 6th, 2024 —Algeria has made significant strides in achieving self-sufficiency in synthetic lubricants, with Minister of Trade and Export Promotion, Tayeb Zitouni, revealing that the country currently fulfills over 70% of its lubricant requirements through expanding local production.
In a recent interview with El Watan newspaper during his visit to Annaba on May 28th, Minister Zitouni expressed confidence in Algeria’s ability to achieve total self-reliance in lubricant production in the near future, despite the need for some specific lubricant imports.
Encouraging the consumption of Algerian-made products, Minister Zitouni affirmed their quality comparable to imported equivalents, declaring an end to the importation of materials already produced domestically.
The production and distribution of lubricants were deliberated during the Cabinet meeting on May 7th, where President Abdelmadjid Tebboune directed the development of a regulatory framework governing the sector’s operations, standards, and quality criteria.
President Tebboune also mandated Naftal to oversee production, increase production rates, manage marketing, and handle the importation of non-locally produced lubricants while facilitating the adoption of requisite technologies for local production.
Algeria currently hosts 11 lubricant production plants, with an aggregate annual capacity of 600,000 tons, including six meeting international standards for motor oils mandated by global automobile manufacturers. Additionally, ten more lubricant and motor oil production facilities are under construction in various Algerian provinces, scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.
These forthcoming factories, situated in Skikda, Batna, Algiers, and Oran, underscore a significant shift as former importers transition into local producers, motivated by government incentives, as outlined by a Ministry of Energy and Mines source in late April.
