ALGIERS- In a significant development for advocates of the Sahrawi cause and international legality, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially updated its stance on the Western Sahara issue. The new position closely mirrors the previous one and contradicts the content of a letter from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, where he appeared to align closely with the Moroccan autonomy plan without explicitly endorsing the alleged Moroccan identity of Western Sahara.

The revised position, now available on the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, makes no reference to the autonomy plan and expresses support for the UN-led process to resolve the Western Sahara conflict. International bodies have consistently affirmed that Western Sahara is a non-self-governing territory, necessitating decolonization through a referendum for self-determination of the Sahrawi people. Madrid also reiterates its full support for the efforts of Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara.

The shift in Madrid’s stance, foreshadowed during Pedro Sanchez’s recent address to the UN General Assembly, holds crucial implications for future events, given that Spain remains the “administering power” of Western Sahara according to international law. The next steps involve exerting pressure on Morocco through binding resolutions at the Security Council to comply with international law and facilitate the long-awaited referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
