Algiers, Algeria | November 30th, 2024 — In a significant step towards ensuring sustainable water resources, Taha Derbal, the Minister of Hydraulics, revealed on Saturday in El Tarf that the upcoming commissioning of seawater desalination plants by the end of 2024 will substantially improve potable water supply to Algerian citizens. This strategic move, currently under construction, aims to enhance water availability and address the growing demand for potable water in coastal regions and beyond.

A Vision for Enhanced Water Availability

Speaking at the construction site of the main water reservoir, with a capacity of 50,000 cubic meters, in the commune of Lac des Oiseaux, within the framework of the Koudiat Draouèche desalination plant project in the commune of Berrihane, Minister Derbal emphasized the importance of these projects for ensuring water security. “The goal of constructing seawater desalination stations along the coastal strip is to increase potable water availability and enhance the services provided to the population,” he affirmed.

The desalination plants, designed to address the country’s water shortage due to insufficient rainfall, are seen as a long-term solution for securing sustainable water resources. Minister Derbal underlined that these projects are not just about meeting immediate needs, but ensuring a reliable, climate-resilient water supply for future generations.

A Sustainable Source for National Water Security

The desalination plants are poised to supply not only the coastal wilayas but also areas within a 150 km radius, ensuring an extended network of access to potable water. Minister Derbal pointed out the crucial role desalination plays in Algeria’s broader strategy for water security: “The establishment of these desalination plants is the best option to secure our water supply in light of climate challenges, as desalination represents a sustainable source, unlike traditional water resources.”

With the backing of substantial state investments, Algeria is accelerating its efforts in this area, with rapid progress on the construction and connection of these plants to national water distribution networks. Derbal further assured that the systems to transfer desalinated water would be operational in parallel with the plants, with all projects set to be completed by the end of 2024.

A Boost for National Sovereignty in Water Security

Highlighting the significant achievement of Algerian national companies in managing these large-scale projects, Derbal lauded the role of domestic expertise in strengthening the nation’s sovereignty over its water security. “These projects are now being executed by Algerians, which further reinforces our national sovereignty, especially in such a vital area as water security,” he stated.

Derbal also underscored the swift completion of key infrastructure projects, such as the 50,000 m³ main reservoir, which is now ready for handover, with final touches being made to exterior works. “The project is to be delivered within a strict deadline of 15 days,” he ordered, underscoring the government’s commitment to meeting its deadlines.

Koudiat Draouèche Desalination Plant: A National Milestone

The Koudiat Draouèche seawater desalination plant is one of Algeria’s most ambitious and vital water infrastructure projects. Located in Berrihane, the plant is set to become a cornerstone of the country’s water supply strategy, with a production capacity of 300,000 m³ per day.

The project includes a massive network of 38 water reservoirs with a combined capacity of over 400,000 m³, 17 pumping stations, and 600 km of pipelines of various diameters, stretching from the Koudiat Draouèche station to the Mafragh River junction, in the area of El Battah. The plant’s scale and capacity are unmatched in the country, positioning it as a critical asset for ensuring a steady water supply to millions of Algerians.

In conclusion, Minister Derbal’s statements reflect Algeria’s steadfast commitment to overcoming its water challenges and ensuring that the country’s growing population has access to clean and sustainable water resources. With the completion of these projects, Algeria is on track to bolster its water security, providing a reliable foundation for future economic and social development.
