ALGIERS- In a statement released on Monday, the Algiers Court announced the dismantling of a money laundering network and the concealment of criminal proceeds stemming from suspicious commercial practices in the tobacco trade sector.
According to the Algiers Court, the preliminary investigation opened on this matter revealed that a company specializing in the tobacco sector, “B.D.K.,” was involved in using commercial records of individuals with whom it had no commercial relationship in exchange for sums of money intended to justify the illicit origin of the funds.
The statement specifies that these funds are then deposited in various banks under the names of suspects to prevent the discovery of their suspicious source resulting from tax evasion and money laundering, in addition to seizing amounts in counterfeit national currency.
543 Billion Centimes Seized
The Prosecutor’s Office issued authorization to seize real estate and movable property, funds in bank accounts, and precious metals totaling over 543 billion centimes.
The investigating judge ordered the provisional detention of 12 suspects, while subjecting the remaining suspects to judicial control procedures.
