Maouche, Assad, and Sadi Reflect on FLN Team Legend: Mekhloufi Was a “Remarkable Ambassador” Who Promoted the Liberation Struggle and National Cause

Algiers, Algeria | November 11th, 2024 — Rachid Mekhloufi, a legendary figure in Algerian football and a symbol of the nation’s liberation struggle, was honored at his funeral on Sunday, held at El Alia Cemetery, following his passing at the age of 88. Friends, comrades, and admirers gathered to pay tribute to the former star of the National Liberation Front (FLN) football team, whose career extended beyond sports and deeply intertwined with Algeria’s fight for independence.
Among those reflecting on Mekhloufi’s contributions was Mohamed Maouche, his teammate on the FLN team, who remembered him as an “exceptional ambassador” for both the Algerian people and the revolution. Maouche described Mekhloufi as a selfless patriot, whose dedication to Algeria as both an athlete and freedom fighter left an indelible mark on future generations. “Today, I am deeply saddened by the loss of my brother in the fight for Algeria’s independence. Mekhloufi was a true ambassador for our people and our revolution. History will always speak of him,” Maouche said.
Mohamed Salim Mekhloufi, Rachid’s son, expressed gratitude for the support his family received from the Algerian people and government, noting that his father’s legacy would endure as a symbol of national pride and resistance. Walid Sadi, President of the Algerian Football Federation, highlighted Mekhloufi’s embodiment of Algerian resilience, describing him as “more than a player” and as a figure who showcased the Algerian revolution to the world. “With his passing, Algeria mourns one of its football legends,” Sadi remarked, “His talent and dedication were a source of pride for Algeria’s cause.”
Saleh Assad, former Algerian international player, also reflected on Mekhloufi’s impact, recalling his mentorship during his early career. Assad praised Mekhloufi for instilling values of perseverance and excellence, noting that his influence would live on in the hearts of future generations. Mahmoud Ben Kazou, a longtime friend, highlighted Mekhloufi’s efforts in promoting Algeria’s cause on international stages, and extended condolences to his family.
Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, government officials, Mekhloufi’s family, former comrades, football club leaders, and many citizens attended the funeral, underscoring the collective respect for an Algerian icon whose contributions to both sports and the nation’s struggle for independence remain a source of pride and inspiration.
