Algiers, Algeria | August 8th, 2024 — The French magazine Marianne has launched a scathing critique of the French government’s recent endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, arguing that it exposes deep-seated hypocrisies and inconsistencies within French political circles. The magazine’s editorial scrutinizes President Emmanuel Macron’s international diplomatic approach, revealing contradictions and strategic failures.
In the editorial titled “The Western Sahara Conflict Reveals the Cowardice and Inconsistencies of the French Political Class,” or « Le conflit autour du Sahara occidental révèle les lâchetés et les incohérences de la classe politique française », Marianne condemns Macron’s endorsement of Morocco’s plan as a substantial diplomatic concession that neglects the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. This endorsement, announced in conjunction with King Mohammed VI’s 25th reign anniversary, is portrayed as a betrayal of international principles supporting Sahrawi independence.
The magazine criticizes Macron for his apparent disregard for the Sahrawi struggle, accusing him of further entrenching the marginalized status of the Sahrawi people. Marianne frames Macron’s actions as a departure from established international norms concerning self-determination, and underscores the irony of Morocco’s surveillance of French officials, including Macron, using the Pegasus spyware.
Additionally, Marianne draws parallels between Morocco’s use of migration as a political bargaining chip and similar strategies employed by other nations, such as Belarus and Turkey. The magazine highlights an inconsistency in France’s responses to Moroccan tactics compared to its stance on migration pressure from other countries.
The editorial further criticizes Macron’s broader international strategy, accusing him of lacking a coherent vision and failing to maintain consistent foreign policy positions. Marianne points out contradictions in Macron’s approach to various global issues, including Ukraine, Lebanon, and Gaza, characterizing his foreign policy as “successive” rather than “simultaneous” in its execution.
Moreover, the magazine highlights the silence of French political figures, notably Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his party, La France Insoumise (LFI), on the issue of France’s support for Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara. Marianne accuses Mélenchon and LFI of neglecting the issue despite its significant economic and strategic implications.
Overall, Marianne positions France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as indicative of broader flaws within French foreign policy and political discourse, emphasizing a disconnect between political rhetoric and the realities of international diplomacy.
