Algiers, Algeria | January 16th, 2025 — In a significant development aimed at enhancing trade and investment between Algeria and the United Kingdom, the Algeria-UK Business Council (AUBC) has appointed Martyn Roper as its new Chairman. This appointment comes at a pivotal moment for both countries, as they seek to further solidify their commercial relations and explore new areas of cooperation.

In an exclusive statement to Dzair Tube, Roper, who is also the former British Ambassador to Algeria, expressed his optimism and commitment to strengthening the ties between the two nations. “Geographically, Algeria and the UK are very close — just a two to two-and-a-half-hour flight apart. This proximity presents numerous opportunities for collaboration,” Roper noted. “The UK is seen as a reliable and trusted partner by Algerian businesses, which gives me the confidence that we can make substantial progress in improving trade relations.”

Roper acknowledged the challenges of advancing trade partnerships, noting that fostering strong commercial relationships is a long-term endeavor. “Improving trade relationships is not something that happens overnight. It often takes many years of hard work,” he emphasized. “The Algeria-UK Business Council is committed to doing its part in strengthening the contacts and facilitating the growth of our mutual trade and economic ties.”

Roper’s appointment follows the tenure of Mrs. Olga Maitland, who expressed her deep satisfaction in passing the baton to Roper. “It has been a great pleasure to pass on the responsibility to someone of Martin Roper’s stature,” Maitland stated. “As a former British Ambassador to Algeria, his experience and understanding of both countries’ economic landscapes will be invaluable in furthering the commercial relationship between Algeria and the UK.”

Roper’s leadership comes at a time when both Algeria and the UK are eager to diversify their economic partnerships, moving beyond traditional sectors and into emerging fields, such as technology, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. With his extensive diplomatic background and understanding of Algeria’s business environment, Roper is well-positioned to drive forward the goals of the Business Council and ensure that both nations benefit from enhanced economic collaboration.
