ALGIERS- In a significant development for Algeria’s industrial landscape, authorities in the Bechar province have designated a sprawling 3,000-hectare area for the establishment of a state-of-the-art steel complex in the new Toumiat industrial zone, located north of Bechar.
The Governor of Bechar, Mohamed Saïd Benkamou, highlighted ongoing efforts to connect the site to various utility networks, including electricity, gas, and water, emphasizing the strategic importance of this infrastructure development.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Sakhr Harami, the CEO of Manadjim El-Djazaïr (Manal) Group, revealed plans to commence construction on the steel complex in the coming days. The project aims to leverage the iron ore reserves of Gara Djebilet in Tindouf for steel production.
During its initial phase, the steel complex will have the capacity to process two million tonnes of iron ore into one million tonnes of iron concentrate. Subsequently, in its second phase, the facility will ramp up production, capable of processing 20 million tonnes of iron ore to yield 10 million tonnes of iron concentrate, indicating a substantial expansion in capacity.
“We have reviewed preparations for the commencement of construction of this new industrial project, in collaboration with our Chinese partners and local authorities,” stated Harami, underlining the collaborative efforts involved in the project’s realization.
In addition to the construction activities, plans are in place to initiate training programs for personnel, including managerial staff, technicians, and workers, to equip them with the necessary skills to effectively operate and manage the steel complex once it enters the operational phase. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the industrial endeavor.
