Algiers, Algeria | June 8th, 2024 — In France, the European election campaign has seen an increase in attacks targeting Algeria, particularly from right-wing and far-right parties. These political figures have discovered that criticizing Algeria resonates well with their electorate and the broader French public. This tactic was notably employed by Sarah Knafo, a candidate for the European elections from Éric Zemmour’s Reconquête party, who is also his partner.
French television platforms and social media have become battlegrounds for these assaults, often spreading unverified claims about Algeria. A striking example of this trend involves a tweet from Knafo, which has been pinned for the past three weeks, falsely claiming that Algeria receives €800 million annually from France in development aid. This assertion appears designed to exploit anti-Algerian, anti-Islam, and anti-migrant sentiments prevalent among certain segments of the French public.
When questioned by TF1 about this tweet, Knafo’s team cited figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as reported by Challenges magazine. However, upon investigation, TF1 found that the €800 million figure Knafo referenced was actually the cumulative amount from 2017 to 2022, calculated by the OECD for Challenges.
The OECD’s 2024 report clarifies that France invested €15.34 billion in public development aid across all countries, with only €129.6 million allocated to Algeria. This is a stark contrast to the annual €800 million claimed by Knafo. This incident highlights how misinformation is used to attack Algeria, disregarding factual accuracy.
The spread of such false information underscores the ongoing exploitation of anti-Algerian sentiment in French political campaigns, particularly by right-wing and far-right parties.
