ALGIERS- The MC Alger (MCA) has shown solidarity with the USM Alger (USMA) in response to the provocative actions of the Moroccan team Nahdhet Berkane, also known as Renaissance Berkane Club, which attempted to wear jerseys displaying a “political” message featuring the annexation of Western Sahara to the map of Morocco.
In an official statement released on Saturday, the MC Alger, the oldest Algerian football club, expressed unwavering support for its neighboring club, USM Alger, as they prepare for the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals. This support comes in light of reprehensible efforts to involve them in political controversies, which are far removed from the noble objectives of sports.
The management of Algeria’s oldest football club condemned the actions of Nahdhet Berkane, who tried to incorporate political slogans onto their team jerseys upon their arrival at Algiers international airport, in anticipation of participating in an official continental competition.
The MCA emphasized that such actions are contrary to the regulations established by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). From this perspective, the club reaffirmed its full support for USMA, the representative of Algeria in this continental competition.
Furthermore, the MCA’s statement highlighted the solidarity and unity among Algerian football clubs in opposing any attempts to politicize sporting events. It emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of fair play and respect in football competitions.
