Algiers, Algeria | June 7th, 2024 — Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, has called upon media professionals to approach the coverage of the upcoming presidential election with the highest level of professionalism and integrity. During a meeting held on Thursday with directors and representatives of both print and electronic media, Laagab emphasized the crucial role of the media in shaping public awareness and political participation.
Emphasis on Professionalism and Ethical Journalism
Laagab urged media outlets to cover the presidential election scheduled for September 7 with a strong sense of responsibility, objectivity, and fairness. He highlighted the importance of accurate and ethical reporting, particularly in the context of political events. “Media professionals must handle the election dossier with utmost professionalism, ensuring objective and equitable coverage of political parties’ activities to enhance public awareness and political engagement,” Laagab stated.
Adherence to Legal and Ethical Standards
The minister reminded media establishments of the legal requirements stipulated in the Organic Law on Information. He stressed the need for adherence to Article 3, which mandates respect for human dignity in media activities, Article 20, which emphasizes the verification and sourcing of information, and Article 35, which insists on strict compliance with professional ethics and deontology.
Combatting Misinformation and Fake News
Acknowledging the challenges posed by unreliable information sources and fake news, Laagab called for vigilance and caution. He noted that media organizations must navigate these challenges by adhering to their editorial policies and ensuring rigorous fact-checking processes. The minister also pointed out the need to curb professional and ethical violations within media practices, referencing the role of regulatory authorities and the pending establishment of the Press Regulatory Authority and the Council of Professional Ethics and Deontology.
Addressing Media Concerns
The meeting also served as a platform for media representatives to voice their concerns. Laagab listened to various issues raised by the participants, reiterating the ministry’s commitment to supporting media professionalism and addressing their challenges.
This meeting is part of a series of periodic engagements organized by the Ministry of Communication to foster a constructive dialogue with media stakeholders and ensure the responsible dissemination of information.
