ALGIERS- The Gara Djebilet phosphate mine project, a cornerstone of Algeria’s national mining development strategy, continues to gather momentum in its efforts to rapidly increase production capacity and contribute to the rise in non-hydrocarbon exports.
Following the recent directives from the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to expedite the construction of the Béchar-Tindouf railway, a first training session for workers of the National Iron and Steel Company (Feraal) for the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet deposit has been launched in the Tindouf province.
Addressing this significant milestone, Mohamed Sakhr Harami, CEO of the public industrial group Sonarem, emphasized that “the training of employees, engineers, and technicians for the Gara Djebilet iron ore exploitation project marks a significant step in the realization of this strategic project.”
Speaking at the ceremony marking the launch of this session, attended by Sonarem CEO Djebbar Mhidi, Feraal CEO Ahmed Benabbès, and local authorities, Mr. Harami added that “this session reflects the project’s progress towards its intended goals,” noting that his organization has developed a comprehensive training program to enhance the management skills of mining projects. He further highlighted that “the youth of the province should benefit from a theoretical training program at the national vocational training institute and a practical component at the mines under Sonarem.”
Mr. Harami emphasized that “these training sessions will enable young individuals to gain the necessary experience for the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet deposit,” emphasizing that “these trained professionals should, in turn, contribute to the development of a competent cadre and recruit new talents at the site.”
At the event, Djebbar Mhidi, CEO of Sonarem’s training subsidiary, proceeded with the signing of employment contracts for the first cohort of 21 qualified professionals for the Gara Djebilet iron ore exploitation project. These contracts also enable them to undergo two to three months of training in Tindouf, followed by further training at Sonarem’s mining projects.
Mr. Mhidi urged the contracted professionals to leverage the training sessions for their safety, equipment preservation, and achievement of set objectives. In a statement to the APS, Feraal CEO Ahmed Benabbès stated that “Sonarem’s efforts are expected to contribute to the effective exploitation of the Gara Djebilet deposit by preparing national talents and other young individuals from the Tindouf region technically by 2025 to assume their roles.”
The contract signatories expressed their readiness to embark on this new experience and aspire to contribute to the development of the mining industry in the Tindouf province.
