ALGIERS- During the ceremony for the allocation of contracts for the construction of 20 new photovoltaic solar power plants across 17 provinces of the country in Algiers on Thursday, the Minister of Energy, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, assured that this initiative represents a decisive step towards realizing Algeria’s ambitious program for solar energy and renewable energies.

“With the implementation of these projects, Algeria will succeed for the first time in its history in realizing projects for the production of 3000 megawatts of solar energy through giant plants. This is also a decisive step towards the realization of the 15,000 megawatt project through the construction of 40 photovoltaic solar power plants,” he declared.

Mr. Arkab emphasized that Algeria is committed to establishing a new, more efficient energy model that is also based on the rational exploitation of available resources, the integration of traditional, modern, and renewable energies: “A new approach that will contribute to confirming our energy security,” he specified.

The Minister of Energy also assured that the signing of contracts by Sonelgaz for the construction of the new power plants is tangible evidence of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s good governance for the effective utilization of clean and renewable energies, especially solar energy sources, given the country’s vast potential. “It is high time to exploit these potentialities to diversify our energy resources to preserve our gas resources and create new economic value and also to respond favorably to our increasing energy demand,” he emphasized.
