Algiers, Algeria | May 23, 2024 — On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Iran bid its final farewell to President Ebrahim Raïssi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, along with their companions, after the tragic helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan Province. Millions of mourners, comprising people of all ages and backgrounds, gathered across cities to pay their respects during a three-day mourning period, marked by solemn ceremonies and processions attended by dignitaries from around the world.
In Mashhad, President Raïssi was laid to rest next to the revered shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the Dar al-Salam area of the Razavi shrine. Mayor Mohammad Reza Qalandar Sharif estimated that over 3 million people participated in the public funeral procession, demonstrating the profound grief felt by the nation.
In Tehran, Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian was interred near the shrine of Sayyid Abdul Azim al-Hasani (AS) in Shahr-e Rey. The funeral ceremony, commencing from the “Basij” square, drew a diverse crowd, including families of martyrs and civil and military officials.
In East Azerbaijan Province, particularly in the city of Tabriz, large crowds mourned the loss of the representative of Imam Khamenei and Imam of Tabriz, Sayyid Mohammad Ali Al-Hashem, and the Governor of East Azerbaijan, Malek Rahmati.
Additionally, the body of Brigadier General Taher Mostafavi, one of the martyrs who accompanied President Raisi, was laid to rest in the Jannat al-Zahra cemetery in southern Tehran. This coincided with the anniversary of the liberation of Khorramshahr.
Brigadier General Mostafavi was interred beside his brother, Martyr Hossein Mostafavi, in section 27 of the Martyrs’ Garden at Jannat al-Zahra. Meanwhile, the bodies of Martyr Mohsen Daryanoush and Martyr Behrouz Ghadimi, also members of the helicopter crew, were laid to rest in Najafabad and Abhar, respectively.
The nation’s mourning period, marked by an outpouring of grief and solidarity, reflects the deep reverence held for President Raeisi and his companions. The massive turnout at the funeral ceremonies underscores their significant influence on Iran and its people.
A Groundswell of Support
Millions of mourners lined the streets as the procession carrying the coffins of the martyrs moved through various cities. The funeral processions were attended by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who declared three days of national mourning, and representatives from regional resistance groups.
The global response to the tragedy was immense, with statesmen from over 60 countries attending a memorial service in Tehran. Leaders expressed condolences and solidarity with Iran, underscoring the respect and admiration for President Raeisi’s leadership.
Social Media Response: Countering Western Narratives
In defiance of Western media narratives aiming to downplay the Iranian populace’s reaction to the tragic events, people worldwide took to social media platforms, leveraging images and videos to depict the profound mourning and support for President Raïssi and his companions. These online posts served as a potent counter-narrative, vividly illustrating the authentic outpouring of emotion and solidarity witnessed across digital channels.
Journalistic Integrity Prevails
Moreover, journalists and activists emerged as stalwarts of truth, actively combatting misinformation disseminated by mainstream Western media establishments. Through meticulous fact-checking and investigative journalism, they meticulously uncovered inaccuracies and biases, ensuring an accurate portrayal of the Iranian community’s response to the funeral processions.
