Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 –  Ibrahim Fathi, a senior executive at the National Company for Mining Research and Exploration (Sonarem), stated during his interview on National Radio on Monday that the company aims to actively contribute to the government’s policy for economic revitalization.

Fathi emphasized the company’s commitment to participating fully in the revival of the mining sector through the initiation of major structural projects and initiatives related to the transformation and valorization of mining products. Among these initiatives, he highlighted the zinc-lead deposit project in Tala Hamza-Oued Amizour (Bejaïa), known for being one of the world’s largest reserves of these strategic metals. He also mentioned the inauguration of bentonite factories in Maghnia (Tlemcen) and calcium carbonate factories in Oggaz (Mascara) in September 2023, with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year. Additionally, he referred to the ongoing integrated phosphate project in Bled El Hadba, Tébessa, and other projects aimed at revitalizing the sector.

To achieve these objectives, Fathi outlined the group’s strategy across several axes. In addition to launching new mega projects and reviving stalled ones, the group focuses on prospecting, promotion, and technology transfer, as well as the development of know-how through partnerships. They are also working on creating a map of mining sites to assess existing potential and identify resources.

The company’s action plan also involves establishing links with universities to enhance the valorization and transformation of mining products. In this context, Fathi announced the signing of two agreements with the Universities of Bejaïa and Annaba. He stressed that Algeria possesses the human, material, and technical resources necessary to develop the mining processing industry.

Another aspect of the company’s roadmap is the creation of a subsidiary dedicated solely to training human resources in mining professions. This subsidiary will provide practical training for university graduates and vocational training institute students. Regarding the creation of a mining town around the Gara Djebilet deposit and the primary iron ore processing plant project at Gara Djebilet, Fathi indicated that progress is underway, with studies nearing completion.

It’s notable that this project is part of the valorization and exploitation of the Gara Djebilet mine, one of the world’s largest in terms of reserves, with nearly 3.5 billion tons of iron ore and a production capacity of 2 to 3 million tons per year initially (2022-2025), increasing to 40 to 50 million tons per year from 2026 onwards. Fathi emphasized that the primary goal of the company is to meet local demand while targeting global markets in case of production surplus.

“We are on a promising trajectory. We must continue our efforts. We need all skills and forms of energy to meet the challenge of revitalizing the sector so that it can contribute effectively to economic growth,” he said. According to him, making the mining activities law more attractive is essential to attract investors.
