ALGIERS- In response to inquiries regarding the revitalization of coral exploitation, Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Products, Ahmed Badani, underscored the need for hyperbaric chambers, emphasizing that his department has taken steps to ensure all necessary conditions for the proper care of divers through multidisciplinary and intersectoral actions. Minister Badani made these remarks during an appearance at the Echaâb newspaper forum.
Minister Badani disclosed that an interministerial meeting would convene “soon” to deliberate on the matter of coral exploitation revival. He outlined that a simulation exercise covering all technical aspects of coral exploitation would precede the official launch of the operation.
The minister’s statement comes amidst discussions surrounding the potential resumption of coral exploitation activities, a practice that requires careful consideration of safety measures and environmental impact. With coral reefs facing threats from various factors including climate change and overexploitation, any decision regarding coral exploitation must be made with caution and thorough planning.
Highlighting the importance of hyperbaric chambers in ensuring the safety of divers engaged in coral exploitation, Minister Badani reiterated his ministry’s commitment to providing adequate support and resources for this endeavor. Hyperbaric chambers are essential for treating diving-related injuries such as decompression sickness, commonly known as “the bends,” which can occur when divers ascend too quickly from deep dives.
The upcoming interministerial meeting signifies a collaborative effort among various government departments to address the complexities of coral exploitation and devise a comprehensive strategy moving forward. By bringing together stakeholders from different sectors, including fisheries, environmental protection, and maritime affairs, the meeting aims to facilitate informed decision-making and ensure that all relevant factors are taken into account.
