ALGIERS- Speaking this Sunday in Tizi-Ouzou, the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Mr. Ali Aoun, assured that nearly 60% of the insulin distributed in the national market is produced in Algeria.
Mr. Aoun, who oversaw the second export operation of insulin produced in Algeria to Saudi Arabia at the factory of the Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk in Tizi-Ouzou, also reassured about the availability of insulin in all its forms:
“Today, we have a stock of 6 months at the various production units and another sufficient stock for a period of 6 months with distributors and pharmaceutical circuits. We will continue to support local producers to achieve the set objectives,” he emphasized.
Savings of 17 Million Euros
The Novo Nordisk factory in Tizi-Ouzou is preparing to export a quantity of 2.5 million insulin pens to Saudi Arabia. According to figures reported by the national television, the value of this operation, which will be carried out in three stages, is around 11 million euros, with additional revenue of 3.8 million euros.
It is worth recalling that the first export operation of metformin produced in Algeria was carried out in November 2023 to Libya.
“The reduction in the prices of insulin pens has enabled the National Insurance Fund to save nearly 17 million euros. Novo Nordisk plans to produce 57 million doses of insulin in Algeria by 2025, in order to cover the needs of the domestic market and boost exports,” the same source reports.
