ALGIERS- Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Mr. Ali Aoun, conducted an inspection visit on Monday at the “Mokrane Zerrouki” production units located in Cheraga (west of Algiers), which are part of the Textiles and Leather Group “Getex.”
In a statement to the press, Mr. Aoun indicated that this visit “is part of the implementation of the instructions of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who ordered a series of inspection visits to factories and production units to address their issues and help them improve their performance to meet local consumption demand.”
The operation aims to boost these industries essential to the Algerian market and enable them to compete with foreign products, the minister added, according to APS news agency.
Mr. Aoun commended “the efforts of the workers and their diligence in work,” stating that the processing industries sector provides as many job opportunities as any other sector to meet the country’s needs for these products and to move towards exports.
Furthermore, the minister emphasized that “there are certain shortcomings to be addressed to face competition, especially since the raw material is of good quality and the models are good.”
During the inspection of the workshops, the minister ordered the organization of work on sewing machines according to a rotation system, as well as the recruitment of more workers to fill vacant positions.
He also ordered the development of an emergency plan for fire prevention and vigilance measures, as the factory contains inflammable raw materials, along with the installation of a camera surveillance system.
Regarding the national shoe industry, the minister stated that it meets domestic demand, recalling the implementation of a policy to protect local products by regulating imports in this area.
During his tour of the units, accompanied by CEO Mr. Berkani Toufik, the minister received explanations about work methods and advanced production techniques.
He also discussed working conditions and production methods and stages with the workers. Mr. Aoun encouraged workers to increase productivity, which he believes will have an impact on salaries, which will be “improved.”
It is worth mentioning that the Getex group recorded a turnover of 15 billion DA in 2023, with a target of reaching 20 billion DA in 2024, after experiencing positive performance growth and resumption of production following the decline during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group consists of 39 units specialized in textiles, shoes, uniforms, and leather, as well as a company specialized in distribution. It also operates 29 stores and 44 commercial premises under a company specializing in the marketing of coats and leather products.
