ALGIERS- During an impromptu visit to the El Hadjar steel complex in Annaba on Thursday, Minister of Industry Ali Aoun refuted reports of production cessation following the incident of a dust extractor collapse on April 14.
Aoun assured that the recent accidents at the complex did not affect production due to the availability of a safety stock of raw materials:
“The production within the complex has never stopped thanks to the new strategy adopted for operation and raw material availability,” he declared, addressing the dust extractor collapse incident. “Such accidents are foreseeable in this type of complex, but for a clear picture, the judiciary has initiated an investigation… For now, we cannot accuse any party,” he added.
Regarding the origin of this incident, Aoun stated that it was reported after a malfunction in the technological and production circuit, causing the shutdown of the blast furnace (hot spot) that supplies raw material to other workshops:
“It is the system that feeds the blast furnace that is stopped, not the hot spot, and we have a safety stock that can cover the needs of the production workshops. We have instructed the complex’s officials to expedite the resolution of this malfunction,” he explained.
Incident at the TSS unit: 7 Individuals Placed Under Judicial Supervision
The same official praised the commitment of the complex’s leaders and workers, stating that the new strategy is already yielding results: “Last month, the complex recorded a net profit, something that has not happened for years. We will mobilize more resources to support this process,” he assured.
Furthermore, Minister Aoun also addressed the first accident recorded last March at the Seamless Tubing Unit (TSS), stating that 7 executives and employees of the maintenance company have been placed under judicial supervision: “This does not mean they are implicated and accused, and we are awaiting the results of the investigation,” he clarified.
