Algiers- Algeria, May 10, 2024 – On Thursday, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, announced the ongoing study of a project for local aluminum manufacturing in partnership between “IMETAL” Holding and an African bauxite producer, the primary raw material used in production.
During his address at the Council of the Nation, Mr. Aoun explained that this partnership with a bauxite producer, a material not found in Algeria, aims to establish an industry to meet the domestic market’s aluminum needs and reduce the import bill for this material.
However, the minister highlighted that aluminum production from bauxite is a “polluting” process, requiring all necessary precautions to preserve the environment.
Regarding Algeria’s steel industry, Mr. Aoun indicated significant progress, with exports reaching nearly one billion dollars.
He announced plans to launch the manufacturing of metal sheets for the automotive industry in Oran before the end of 2024, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the “Sider El Hadjar” Complex. This support aims to restore its position within the national industrial fabric and contribute to national economic development through a development plan deemed “necessary” to keep pace with technological and energy transformations.
Mr. Aoun specified that the main objective of the Complex’s development plan is to increase production capacities and diversify high-value-added and superior-quality steel products.
He also mentioned the recent foundation stone laying for the exploitation of the zinc and lead mine project in Tala-Hamza de Oued Amizour (Béjaïa), which contains exploitable reserves estimated at 34 million tons for 20 years, capable of developing this sector.
Furthermore, the minister noted Algeria’s transition from an importer to an exporter in the steel industry over the past three years, although he highlighted persisting needs in certain types of steel, such as metal plates used in the automotive industry.
In this context, Mr. Aoun announced that “the Oran complex will begin production of this material before the end of the current year.”
