Minister Aoun Visits SYM Scooters, Motorcycles Factory in Sétif: Emphasis on Local Manufacturing Inputs

ALGIERS- During his visit to the Sétif province, the Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production made his first stop with a visit to the motorcycle and scooter manufacturing unit, Algeria HAM Motors. Located in Aïn Azel, in the southern part of the province, the welding, painting, and bodywork unit of the Thai brand SYM covers an area of 2.6 hectares and employs 300 full-time workers.
Ali Aoun, while inspecting various workshops of the company, received a detailed presentation of the manufacturing process from the plant’s director. He noted that importing specific sands for testing purposes is neither profitable nor recommended, suggesting that the company should approach the relevant ministry services with the sand specifications to be directed to a local supplier and reduce dependence on imported products, even if it is part of support measures.
The minister took the opportunity to deliver the operating license or approval for the importation of motorcycles and scooters to the operator. He emphasized that Algeria HAM Motors must wait to receive the final approval to start actual production, following the provisions of executive decree 22-384 of November 17, 2022, and the attached specifications. Established in 1997, Algeria Ham Motors, the official representative of the Thai brand SYM in Algeria, began the assembly process in 2005 after investing 489 million dinars. The production target is 7,000 units per month.
The Bordj Bou Arréridj – Sétif Axis: An Industrial Hub par Excellence
During his visit, the minister also emphasized the need to exploit locally available raw materials and inputs instead of importing them to increase integration rates and reduce the import bill. At the end of his visit, Minister Aoun expressed his acknowledgment of the high level of industrialization in the Sétif province. He highlighted that the Bordj Bou-Arréridj – Sétif axis has become an industrial hub par excellence.
It is worth noting that in addition to the electronic, household appliance, and pharmaceutical industries, Bordj Bou Arréridj province has another manufacturer of motorcycles and scooters, SAM, and a tire manufacturer, Iris Tyres. The Sétif ENPC has also started producing plastic injection parts for scooters. Before the suspension of SKD kit imports in 2019, SYM and SAM brands were already assembled in Algeria without benefiting from ANDI advantages, to which operators are eligible after obtaining approval.
