Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, October 11, 2023 –The 25th ministerial meeting of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF) in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, saw the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, reiterate the organization’s unwavering commitment to shaping the global energy landscape.
Minister Arkab emphasized the critical role GECF member states play in supplying the world with natural gas and reaffirmed their responsibility in ensuring the stability of energy markets. Moreover, he underlined the need for sustainable development and the transition to cleaner energy sources as an opportunity rather than a challenge.
As the world’s energy demands continue to evolve, Minister Arkab stressed that GECF member states bear a significant responsibility in providing the energy resources necessary for a constantly changing world. In his address to the forum, he emphasized that energy is the engine of economic growth, technological progress, job creation, and improving the standard of living. With a focus on natural gas and clean technologies, he stated, “By investing in natural gas resources as a source of clean energy, we will continue to play a central role in the future of the energy world.”
In line with their commitment to global energy security, Minister Arkab called for greater cooperation with international partners. “Cooperation and dialogue are essential to reduce possible gaps regarding energy, particularly natural gas, to guarantee reliable and affordable energy supplies worldwide,” he said. He emphasized the GECF’s role in enhancing the resilience of export chains and reducing vulnerability to fluctuations in natural gas prices, along with efforts to ensure that the benefits from the industry reach all member countries’ populations.
To strike a balance between sustainable development and energy poverty, Minister Arkab urged a significant role in directing financial resources toward supporting major energy projects. These projects should help combat energy poverty globally and narrow energy-related disparities, ultimately improving the lives of millions.
Additionally, Minister Arkab highlighted the environmental and climatic aspects of energy production, emphasizing the responsibility to manage energy resources sustainably and combat climate change. He called on GECF member countries to set an example by investing in clean technologies, expanding energy infrastructure, and reducing gas emissions contributing to global warming.
Arkab also noted one of the major challenges GECF members face is the transition to a global economy built on cleaner energy sources. He views this challenge as a unique opportunity to steer the world toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
The Minister also discussed the upcoming 7th meeting of Heads of State and Government of the GECF, scheduled for March 2024 in Algiers, Algeria. He expressed Algeria’s commitment to making the event a resounding success. Minister Arkab lauded the efforts of Mr. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF, in leading the organization with a clear vision and strong determination. Under his leadership, the Forum has experienced positive change due to the growing importance of natural gas as a clean and sustainable energy source.
As the GECF continues to play a central role in shaping the global energy future, Minister Arkab’s remarks in Malabo reflect the organization’s commitment to responsible energy production, environmental sustainability, and international cooperation. The 7th meeting in Algiers next March promises to be a historic opportunity for GECF member states to reaffirm their dedication to these principles and ensure a more sustainable, cleaner energy future for all.
