ALGIERS- During a meeting on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf received the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, affirming that the tragic situation in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian cause remain at the top of Algeria’s priorities at the United Nations Security Council.
Attaf reiterated Algeria’s commitment to immediate and permanent ceasefire efforts and to facilitating unconditional and unrestricted humanitarian efforts while ensuring the protection of Palestinian civilians.
“Algeria will continue to emphasize the urgent need to support the historic and inalienable right of the Palestinian people to establish their sovereign and independent state,” the minister added, emphasizing that “this is the only way to ensure lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.”
He assured that “the ICRC can rely on Algeria’s voice in the Security Council to strongly defend its humanitarian mission as an independent, neutral, and impartial organization.”
At the same time, the minister also expressed Algeria’s desire to “deepen the fruitful discussions initiated three months ago in New York with the ICRC on the Palestinian cause and other crises in our region and beyond, especially as the Committee has emerged in all these unstable environments as a salutary force of hope and a key partner for peace and justice.”
Minister Attaf also reiterated Algeria’s gratitude to the ICRC, which provided the country with archives related to its humanitarian activities during the independence struggle.
