Minister Brahim Merad Attends 5th Ordinary Session of the African Union Technical Committee on Urban Development and Local Governance

Algiers, Algeria | December 20th, 2024 — Minister of Interior and Local Assemblies, Brahim Merad, participates today in the 5th Ordinary Session of the African Union’s Specialized Technical Committee on Public Service, Local Authorities, Urban Development, and Decentralization. The meeting, held in Tunis, gathers key stakeholders from across the African continent to discuss strategies aimed at advancing local governance and urban development in Africa.

Focus on Decentralization and Sustainable Development

The primary objective of the session is to prepare action plans for the years 2025 and 2026, specifically focusing on deepening decentralization and promoting good governance as foundational pillars for achieving sustainable development at the local level. The meeting underscores the importance of empowering local authorities, enhancing urban housing conditions, and promoting effective decentralization to ensure that African cities and towns thrive in an equitable and sustainable manner.

A significant part of the discussions revolves around exploring ways to enhance the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to improve service delivery at the local level. The committee focuses on developing new approaches to providing essential services such as healthcare, education, and housing, utilizing the latest technological innovations to optimize efficiency and reach.

The session witnesses the active participation of representatives from 44 African Union member states, signaling a strong commitment to regional cooperation and shared progress. This gathering marks a significant step toward aligning Africa’s development goals with the global sustainable development agenda.
