ALGIERS- On Wednesday in Algiers, Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Youcef Cherfa, met with Mr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, as reported in a statement released by the ministry on Thursday.

According to the statement, the discussions focused on exploring partnership opportunities between Algeria and the UN organization, particularly in the fields of agriculture and food security. Both parties emphasized the FAO’s efforts to support countries in the Global South in achieving sustainable development goals.

“In this context, Mr. Dongyu highlighted the significant role of Algeria, as an African country, in strengthening South-South cooperation, notably through the Algerian agency for international cooperation, while reaffirming the organization’s commitment to supporting Algeria in its development efforts, such as the green dam project,” the statement noted.

During the meeting, Minister Cherfa outlined Algeria’s strategy for agricultural sector development and food security, highlighting Algerian experience in rural area development and discussing potential partnerships with other countries.

“Several other issues related to the sector were also addressed during the meeting, including the development of economic irrigation systems, combating desertification, improving agricultural production in rural areas, and increasing agricultural profitability,” the ministry’s statement concluded.
