Algiers, Algeria | July 19th, 2024 — In a significant development for Algeria’s agricultural sector, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, laid the first stone for a new grain silo with a capacity of one million quintals in the Mekhanecha Nafaa pilot farm, located in Boumahra Ahmed, 10 kilometers east of Guelma.

During the ceremony, attended by local authorities, Minister Cherfa underscored the strategic importance of this project, which is part of the National Plan for Strategic Crop Development. This plan includes the construction of 30 silos and 350 cereal storage centers across the country. The new silo, situated on a five-hectare site, is expected to play a crucial role in advancing strategic crop cultivation and enhancing storage capacity in the Guelma province.

Cherfa was briefed on the technical aspects of the silo, which is set to be completed within 33 months. He emphasized the need for adherence to the project timeline, stating that once operational, the facility will significantly contribute to the development of strategic crops and increase the region’s cereal storage capacity.

The Minister also highlighted recent directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which include efforts over the next three years to expand cultivated areas in the southern regions to 500,000 hectares and to increase the average yield to over 55 quintals per hectare.

In addition to the Guelma project, Cherfa inspected another silo project in Belkheir, a steel structure with a capacity of 200,000 quintals, which is nearing 95% completion. He also visited the Richi Abdelmadjid agricultural production unit, which spans 1,300 hectares. This unit, previously focused on potato seed cultivation, is now branching into sunflower cultivation, following the transformation of pilot farms into specialized agricultural production units.
