Minister Cherfa Stresses Link Between Food Security, International Law at UN Security Council

ALGIERS- During a debate at the United Nations Security Council on the impact of climate change and food insecurity, Algerian Minister of Agriculture, Youcef Cherfa, emphasized the crucial connection between achieving food security worldwide and upholding international law without double standards.
In his address, Minister Cherfa asserted that Algeria firmly believes that the most effective solutions to combat climate change, food insecurity, and instability in various regions of the world are contingent upon responsible adherence to international law and unwavering commitment to its principles without discrimination or double standards.
Highlighting the dire situation in Gaza, where inhabitants have endured intense bombardment and systemic destruction of vital infrastructure by the occupying authority for over five months, Minister Cherfa emphasized the suffocating food crisis and environmental deterioration in the region. He underscored that Gaza represents one of the most glaring examples of the occupying authority’s blatant disregard for basic ethical norms, international humanitarian and environmental frameworks, and binding international rules.
Reiterating Algeria’s call to the international community, Minister Cherfa lamented the indifference of the international community to these blatant violations. Instead of working to halt Zionist aggression and mitigate its severe repercussions on both humanity and the environment, he noted a systematic campaign to discredit the credibility of UN humanitarian agencies and undermine funding sources aimed at addressing the basic needs of the population.
Minister Cherfa urged the international community, particularly the Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities outlined in the UN Charter regarding international peace and security. He called for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and address the humanitarian situation in Gaza by urgently delivering humanitarian aid to affected populations.
As a responsible member of the international community, Algeria stands ready to contribute to collective efforts to preserve peace, security, and address challenges related to climate change, food security, and conflicts. Minister Cherfa emphasized the necessity for unwavering commitment and concerted action from all states to tackle these pressing issues.
