Algiers, Algeria | May 22, 2024 — Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mokhtar Didouche, announced that 800,000 foreign tourists visited Algeria during the first quarter of 2024.
“We are experiencing an extraordinary influx. In the first quarter of 2024, 800,000 foreign tourists have already visited Algeria,” stated the Minister, emphasizing that these are foreign tourists and not members of the national community abroad.
“Our policy and determination to attract customers are beginning to bear fruit,” Mr. Didouche responded to a question about the usefulness of participating in various tourism fairs and events abroad. “It is reassuring, and what reassures us the most is that the international opinion now has a different image of Algeria,” added the Minister, who was a guest at the “El Moudjahid” Forum.
The Minister highlighted the role of the “2030 Tourist Development Master Plan (SDAT)” which led to the national tourism development strategy, focusing on five dynamics of tourism development, mainly investment, service improvement, promotion, communication development, and the establishment of a legal framework for optimal sector management.
Mr. Didouche underscored the importance of the investment law, which “provides facilitations for investors in the tourism sector to implement their projects,” in addition to the role assigned to the “Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) and the National Agency for Tourist Land.”
“All this strategy we have put in place has started to bear fruit, and currently, tourism is regaining momentum,” he estimated. “We recorded an influx of 3.3 million tourists, including 2.2 million foreign tourists and 1.1 million tourists from our national community abroad,” in 2023, the Minister said.
Stating that these are statistics from the DGSN, the entries at the country’s borders, he stressed that “this is a figure we have not recorded in over 20 years, and this is thanks to the policy we are implementing, step by step, but we know where we are going.”
The Minister recalled the “significant increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting Algeria, especially in the southern regions,” which he attributed to the “facilities related to obtaining entry visas directly upon arrival at the airport.”
Mr. Didouche revealed that forecasts indicated that Algeria “will welcome more than 12 million foreign tourists by 2030,” emphasizing the importance of achieving this goal through the realization of necessary infrastructure, increasing accommodation capacity, and improving services.
According to Mr. Didouche, the tourism sector contributes 2% to Algeria’s GDP and aims to raise it to 6%. The Minister estimated the sector’s foreign exchange earnings at $1.6 billion in 2023. He referred to the World Tourism Organization’s standard that a tourist spends an average of $500 during their stay in the visited country. The Minister multiplied this amount by the 3 million tourists who visited Algeria last year.
