ALGIERS- The Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, issued a call on Thursday for the establishment of the first “Sports Press Ethics Charter,” emphasizing the importance of its future enrichment.
Addressing attendees at the opening of the conference on “Sports Press: Balancing Information Rights and Journalistic Responsibility,” held at the “Nelson Mandela” conference hall, Minister Laagab pledged government support for the implementation of the charter. He stated, “We will provide the necessary support for its implementation.”
During his speech, Laagab highlighted the significant influence of sports journalists, noting that they are followed by a wide audience and, therefore, must specialize in their field. He emphasized the need for journalists to maintain high professional standards and acknowledged that their performances should be scrutinized to elevate sports journalism to a higher level of professionalism.
Furthermore, the minister underscored the importance of specialization for sports journalists to ensure they remain focused on their duties and fulfill them effectively. He promised to provide all necessary assistance to implement the recommendations from the four workshops held during the conference. Additionally, Minister Laagab expressed his willingness to sponsor the award for the best sports journalist.
The conference served as a platform for discussions on the rights and responsibilities of sports journalists, aiming to foster a culture of ethical journalism in the sports media landscape. Participants exchanged ideas on how to enhance professionalism, integrity, and accuracy in sports reporting, with a focus on maintaining a balance between the public’s right to information and the journalists’ responsibility to report ethically.
The call for a “Sports Press Ethics Charter” reflects the government’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in sports journalism. It is expected that the charter will serve as a guiding framework for journalists, outlining ethical standards and practices to uphold integrity and credibility in sports reporting.
