ALGIERS- Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, chaired the proceedings of the National Conference of Directors of national and regional radio stations under the Algerian Radio on Saturday, as per a ministry statement.
The conference took place at the ministry’s headquarters, attended by the Advisor to the President of the Republic, in charge of the General Directorate of Communication, Kamel Sidi Said, the President of the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual (ARAV), Mohamed Louber, the Director-General of National Radio, Mohamed Baghali, regional station directors, and ministry officials.
During the meeting, Laagab emphasized that this gathering “brings together the supervising ministry with the directors of local radios for direct and frank discourse in both directions.” He noted that it follows a series of meetings held by the ministry with directors of public and private media institutions, addressing various issues related to national media, including program schedules dedicated to the month of Ramadan and sports media.
The conference occurred after the promulgation of new legal texts governing the media sector, and Laagab stressed the importance of implementing these new regulations. He urged public media to be the first to comply.
The meeting also took place “on the eve of World Radio Day, which Algeria will celebrate this year from the radio station in Tlemcen.”
Minister Laagab discussed the role of local radios in establishing proximity media, making them the voice of citizens to central and provincial authorities. He highlighted the need to coordinate with local authorities and focus on regional content, personalities, historical landmarks, and state efforts in various fields.
The directives issued during the meeting emphasized the importance of considering sociocultural overlaps with neighboring countries for radios in bordering provinces, addressing frequency interference, coordinating with the province regarding official and unofficial activities, and consulting with central radio.
Laagab stressed the imperative of respecting laws and adhering to professional ethics, aiming to make public media an example to follow. He encouraged local radios to become centers for cultural, civilizational, and social influence that give voice to experts and specialists in their respective fields.
Kamel Sidi Said, the President’s Advisor for the General Directorate of Communication, highlighted that the development and modernization of local radios are among President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s priorities. He praised the significance of new laws in reinforcing different types of media to endow Algeria with the media power it deserves.
Mohamed Baghali, the Director-General of National Radio, mentioned that this regional meeting, which has become a tradition, signifies the state’s attachment and interest in National Radio. He announced the extension of broadcast time for certain local radios to 24/7, starting from February 13.
The conference continued with an extensive debate involving directors of radio stations who expressed their appreciation for the meeting. They shared their concerns and suggestions for developing and diversifying programs and services to better meet audience expectations.
At the conclusion of the conference, Minister Laagab demanded detailed reports to identify the needs of each local radio. This information will be used to study and address any shortcomings encountered by regional radio stations, as stated in the ministry’s press release.
