ALGIERS– The Minister of Communication, Mr. Mohamed Laagab, held a crucial meeting on Thursday with representatives from sports media, underscoring the imperative need to enhance the level of national sports information and align it with the newly established legal environment, particularly following the enactment of recent legislative texts governing the sector.
Conducted at the Mohamed Boudiaf Sports Complex, the meeting aimed to explore avenues for bolstering the performance of national media, strengthening their capabilities, and positioning them as leaders in the regional context, as stated by Mr. Laagab at the outset.
Mr. Laagab emphasized the crucial role of upholding the principles of ethics and professional journalism, highlighting the necessity to “promote the level of sports media performance” through compliance with the “new legal texts governing the sector.”
Journalists Obliged to Adhere to New Legal Framework
During the session, the minister stressed that journalists and media executives are obligated to adhere to the provisions of the Information Law promulgated last August. He specifically referenced articles 03, 16, 17, 20, and 35 of the information law, as well as article 32 of the audiovisual activity law.
While expressing gratitude for journalists’ efforts, Mr. Laagab urged them to familiarize themselves with the new legal texts and revisit foundational principles that can serve as “a basis for sports journalism work.”
Among these fundamental rules, the minister highlighted that “sports journalists must exhibit professionalism, undergo relevant training, and adhere to journalistic writing techniques.” He called on the sports press to “diversify the informative content” further.
Journalists’ Responsibility Starts with Information Verification
Minister Laagab underscored that the “responsibility of journalists begins with verifying the information source and its credibility, in accordance with the new information code.” He emphasized the importance of evaluating whether the information is publishable or not, adding that, at times, journalists may choose, out of responsibility, not to publish information that could jeopardize social fabric, state stability, and international relations.
According to Mr. Laagab, sports journalists should “adhere to their profession and not substitute for specialists” while also “respecting the privacy of individuals.”
Additionally, he clarified that “journalists should not be subject to the influence of the internet and social media but should seek out accurate and authentic information themselves.”
The minister stressed that the purpose of this meeting is not to target specific issues and should not be perceived as a trial against sports journalists. Instead, it serves as a constructive platform for dialogue and mutual understanding, aiming to elevate the standards of sports journalism in Algeria.
