In an Era of Geopolitical Challenges and Media Warfare, Algeria Prioritizes the Ethical and Professional Training of Journalists Committed to National Interests
Algiers, Algeria | April 19th, 2025 — In an address delivered Saturday in Algiers, Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, strongly reaffirmed the strategic importance of cultivating a generation of committed and conscious journalists, capable of defending the country’s interests and confronting disinformation campaigns targeting national institutions.
Speaking at the opening of a specialized training session organized by Algerian Television (EPTV) under the theme: “Strengthening the Skills of Young Journalists in Line with Quality Standards and Ethical Requirements of the Profession”, Minister Meziane warned of the escalating media warfare being waged against Algeria.
“In the face of relentless and hostile disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining our country and its institutions,” he stated, “we need a journalist who is conscious, mature, professional, and firmly engaged in defending the nation and society—one who is immune to the misleading slogans falsely raised under the guise of objectivity and freedom of expression.”
The Minister emphasized that the media’s frontline role in the current context goes far beyond basic reporting. “We must ensure appropriate support for young journalists, guiding them toward professional maturity, intellectual immunity, and heightened awareness in tune with national and societal issues,” he declared.
Mr. Meziane also insisted that journalists must receive balanced and rigorous professional training, supported by a healthy intellectual framework. This, he said, is essential to enable them to understand the local and international transformations, particularly their political implications, and to equip them with the knowledge needed to distinguish facts from narratives, grasp underlying contexts, and address stories with clarity and responsibility.
Highlighting the theme of the session, the Minister urged both public and private media outlets to seize this opportunity to organize similar training programs, particularly for newcomers to the profession. He further assured that the Ministry of Communication stands fully ready to support and contribute to these initiatives.
“These sessions,” he continued, “are not merely technical training—they are a fundamental pillar for strengthening professional ethics, institutional culture, and national loyalty within the ranks of Algerian Television and beyond.”
He expressed confidence that these efforts will enhance the sense of belonging, professional conduct, and ethical discipline among both journalists and content creators, building a robust media sector aligned with the national interest.
From his end, Mohamed Baghali, Director General of EPTV, emphasized the urgency of the moment. “Algeria is experiencing a dynamic phase across economic, social, political, and cultural sectors—something that our adversaries do not overlook. Therefore, our journalists and media professionals must stand on the frontlines to protect and promote the nation’s image and truth.”
