ALGIERS- Minister of Communication, Mohamed Laagab, declared on Thursday in Algiers that the implementation documents concerning the communication sector have been finalized and will be released successively in the upcoming days. This announcement was made during an event overseen by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center, commemorating World Press Freedom Day.
Laagab clarified that the ministry has concluded the drafting of all the implementation documents related to the sector within the designated timeframes set by the President. These documents pertain to the establishment of two regulatory authorities, namely the Ethics and Deontology Council, as well as the definition of the special status of journalists and the specifications for audiovisual communication.
Furthermore, Laagab mentioned that the various bodies outlined in the organic law on Information will be established in due course. He also indicated that the ministry has initiated the process of organizing the infrastructure for these bodies. Additionally, he highlighted the commencement, in mid-April, of aligning electronic and print press activities with the new laws and regulations governing the press activity in Algeria. This includes the acceptance of applications for the establishment of new newspapers, in accordance with the updated declaration system.
Laagab emphasized that publishers who submitted their applications to the Ministry of Communication promptly received their authorizations. Moreover, he disclosed that the specifications for audiovisual communication services will be reviewed during the upcoming Cabinet meeting.
The finalization of these implementation documents marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s ongoing media reform efforts. These reforms aim to promote transparency, professionalism, and adherence to ethical standards within the field of journalism and communication. Through these new regulations, Algeria endeavors to enhance press freedom while upholding responsible and ethical journalistic practices.
On another note, Laagab emphasized that the celebration of World Press Freedom Day is an opportune moment to appreciate the achievements of the sector, acknowledge the sacrifices of journalists, and review policies if necessary.
