Focus on the Challenges, Ethics, and Technological Adaptation in Algeria’s Evolving Media Landscape
Algiers, Algeria | April 26th, 2025 — In a regional meeting held on Saturday in Ouargla, Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane underscored the critical importance of upholding professional and ethical standards in journalism. This gathering, attended by key media figures, government representatives, and industry professionals, reflected the government’s commitment to fostering responsible, innovative, and credible journalism amidst today’s rapidly changing media landscape.
The regional meeting, following similar sessions in Oran and Constantine, provided a vital platform for discussing the ongoing transformation within Algeria’s media sector, especially in light of complex geopolitical challenges and technological advancements. It gathered officials from various media institutions, journalists, professionals, and members of national media organizations, offering a space for open dialogue and shared insights on the sector’s future.
The meeting focused on four thematic workshops addressing the legislative framework governing the communication sector, the reality of audiovisual, written, and digital media in the face of artificial intelligence and 5G technology, the role of institutional communication in promoting Algeria’s image, and the future of specialized media training. These discussions aimed to strengthen professionalism, ethics, and media adaptation to the demands of tomorrow’s digital and technological landscape.
In his opening address, Minister Meziane emphasized that the current challenges facing the media sector demand high levels of professional maturity. He stressed the need for precise, objective, and reliable information, particularly as the influence of social media and the spread of misinformation continues to grow. “The importance of continuous training for journalists cannot be overstated,” Meziane stated, highlighting the role of the media in disseminating accurate and responsible content.
Meziane also addressed the significance of local information, pointing out that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is working tirelessly to ensure balance across Algeria’s regions—economically, socially, and in terms of information access. “This regional meeting serves as a space to openly discuss the current concerns and future perspectives of the media sector, especially in light of technological shifts and their impact on the media scene,” he remarked.
He further emphasized the need for a unified media front to confront challenges arising from international and regional developments, which could pose risks to national sovereignty. To this end, the government has developed new regulations to organize the information and communication sector, ensuring freedom of expression, safeguarding journalists’ rights, and reinforcing ethical practices.
The event in Ouargla, which saw participation from 15 provinces in the southeast of Algeria, marked an important step in enhancing Algeria’s media landscape. It demonstrated a collective will to adapt to technological, ethical, and institutional challenges, reinforcing the media’s role in promoting reliable, public-interest-driven information.
This regional meeting sets the stage for further discussions, including one planned in Algiers on Monday, aiming to engage journalists and media professionals in the development of strategies that will address the sector’s challenges and provide an accurate representation of the current media landscape in Algeria.
