ALGIERS- – The 7th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Algiers is poised to pave the way for a secure, sustainable, and prosperous energy future, according to Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Energy and Government Spokesperson of Mauritania, Nani Ould Chrougha.
In an exclusive interview with the Algerian Press Service (APS), Minister Ould Chrougha emphasized Algeria’s pivotal role as a major economic powerhouse in the gas sector and a leader in hydrocarbon production. He underscored his country’s commitment to developing its natural wealth and strengthening cooperation with Algeria to align with the aspirations of both nations’ leaders, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani of Mauritania.
“Algeria has consistently provided support in terms of technical assistance, investments, and expertise enhancement,” asserted the Minister, highlighting the vital role of regional security and stability in revitalizing energy markets in both Algeria and Mauritania. He emphasized the importance of cooperation, expertise exchange, and technology transfer in this regard.
Minister Ould Chrougha also underscored the significance of the Algiers Summit, given Algeria’s vast experience, potential, and expertise in the gas sector, which can contribute significantly to its further development. He expressed hope that Mauritania would benefit from Algeria’s experiences.
“Algeria will play a pivotal role in the success of this Summit, which will have positive outcomes for the Forum in general and particularly for Mauritania as a recent observer member of the GECF,” he added. Furthermore, the Minister noted that the Algiers Summit holds additional significance due to its gathering of global leaders in natural gas production, with the Forum currently comprising 19 member states, including 12 full members.
Minister Ould Chrougha believes that the strategic dialogues at the Summit will significantly contribute to charting a path towards a secure, sustainable, prosperous, and eco-friendly energy future, especially considering the role of natural gas in transitioning to clean energy. He emphasized their potential to effectively improve the global energy market situation following recent shocks, including the COVID-19 pandemic and events in Ukraine.
Addressing multidimensional challenges, whether financial or technological, the Minister stressed that the widespread orientation towards a secure, sustainable, and equitable energy transition depends on countries’ energy sovereignty needs. He highlighted the importance of strengthening the GECF’s international standing as a global platform for dialogue and cooperation in the energy sector.
The Mauritanian government spokesperson highlighted his country’s recent gas discoveries, such as the Ahmim field shared with Senegal and the Bir Allah field, signaling the beginning of a new phase in Mauritania’s geo-economic positioning. He underscored the longstanding cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania in hydrocarbons, expressing optimism about promising prospects for further cooperation development.
“Increasing security and stability in the region bode well for the flourishing of energy markets in Mauritania and Algeria, particularly in light of shared cooperation, expertise exchange, and technology and information transfer,” concluded Minister Ould Chrougha.
