In a resolute address, Minister Mohamed Meziane urges for a unified front and refined journalism to confront disinformation campaigns, reaffirming the government’s respect for press freedom and President Tebboune’s high regard for the media profession.
Algiers, Algeria | April 28th, 2025 — In a statement delivered in Algiers during the fourth regional meeting of journalists, media professionals, and key communication sector stakeholders, Minister of Communication Mohamed Meziane issued a stark warning: “Algeria is being targeted by dark newsrooms,” referring to organized disinformation networks and hostile media campaigns designed to destabilize the country.
Highlighting the urgent need for vigilance and professionalism, Meziane stressed: “We are in urgent need of protective shields embodied by refined and ethical journalism.” He insisted that Algeria must strengthen its resilience by promoting continuous training and professional excellence among its media practitioners.
In a particularly forceful call, Minister Meziane urged for the formation of a unified front, encompassing journalists, media organizations, and state institutions, to confront the systematic campaigns of misinformation. “Today, more than ever, Algeria needs a cohesive and determined front capable of defending national interests, preserving societal cohesion, and exposing the malicious intents of the adversaries operating in the shadows,” he asserted.
The Minister took the opportunity to reaffirm President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s profound respect for the journalistic profession, emphasizing that the President views a free, responsible, and professional press as a pillar of Algeria’s democratic construction and national sovereignty.
Reflecting on the series of regional meetings, Meziane declared: “Today, we conclude the series of regional encounters addressing the state of communication in Algeria. In our previous meetings, we witnessed tremendous interest and serious engagement regarding the current realities and future challenges of the profession in light of global transformations. I express my satisfaction with this collective awareness and commitment.”
Expounding on the role of media institutions, the Minister noted: “The media system represents a microstructure essential for building a macrostructure that reflects the broader characteristics of our society.” His statement highlights the crucial responsibility borne by journalists and media outlets in shaping the national narrative.
Importantly, Minister Meziane firmly reiterated the government’s respect for press independence: “The executive authority has not and will not interfere in the editorial lines of the national press. Media organizations are free to define and exercise their editorial policies independently.”
At a time when Algeria faces intensifying waves of fake news, distortion, and external manipulations, Meziane’s call for a unified, vigilant, and ethically driven media front represents a critical strategic orientation. His speech serves as a rallying cry for the Algerian media community to stand together, stay resilient, and embody the highest standards of professionalism in defense of truth, national unity, and societal progress.
